Techno astronomy!

I took a photo of the Moon and Venus last night from the back garden, hand held, and then thought, hmm, a bit late for Venus surely.

So then having uploaded the image I remember I had Google Sky Maps on my G1 phone so booted it up, and sure enough....

Is that the two of them together at the top? Are they squaring up of smooching?

No the moon is at the top (half moon) and Venus is the bright 'star' near the bottom.

That's weird. I've caught sight of the moon over the past couple of evenings and it's nowhere near as full up here as it is in your picture (or I don't recollect it being; it's a very slim crescent at the moment). Looking at the picture in another tab I can differentiate Venus more clearly. It looks like it could be just above the houses and no more.

Yea well it was a crescent here too, but due to overexposure its blown out, showing the Earth light on it. And yea Venus is spot on the celestial equator (the ecliptic), just visible, and below that, out of sight, was Mercury.
